Abstract

Indigenous knowledge of medicinal plant use in rural Afghan communities constitutes an important part of the traditional healthcare system but is gradually at risk of being lost. This study was conducted to document this knowledge in the Qoli-Lich area of Ghorband. Data were collected through interviews with local informants, using structured questionnaires. Plant specimens were collected from their natural habitats, identified using standard botanical references, and deposited in the herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Kabul University. In total, 71 species across 28 plant families were recorded, with Asteraceae and Lamiaceae the most dominant. Various plant parts, particularly herbs, were primarily consumed fresh or used as decoctions and infusions to treat gastrointestinal, urinary, respiratory, and cardiovascular disorders. The findings highlight the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and provide a basis for future research in pharmacognosy and drug development.
