Abstract

Afghanistan is a poor country that has been facing food shortages for a long time. In this research, the food security situation in Afghanistan has been evaluated. The findings show that wheat grain and flour imports were 26.2 percent in 2002 and have increased to 31.6 percent by 2020, while, domestic production has grown by 6.4 percent annually. Overall, the average annual growth rate of grain imports was 4.7 percent, which is considered fast. Domestic grain production has kept the food self-sufficiency index at a reasonable level; the self-sufficiency rate of wheat has increased from 58.14 percent in 2001 to 83.25 percent in 2012. Encouraging domestic production is considered a necessary strategy to achieve self-sufficiency and strong food security.
