Abstract

There are many limitations in the use of conventional dosage forms for the local treatment of diseases, such that the drugs are quickly removed from the affected area and have less bioavailability, thus their delivery is ineffective. Hydrogels, as new dosage forms, are capable to overcome the many limitations associated with conventional dosage forms. Hydrogel dosage forms are hydrophilic polymer networks that are made of special natural and synthetic polymers. These dosage forms are able to absorb large amounts of water and release drugs in a controlled manner. It was deduced from the library method that hydrogels can release drugs in a controlled manner by absorbing water, and these medicinal forms are used in the local treatment of the superficial parts of the body (skin, eyes, nose and vaginal cavity).
