Abstract

Communication is a fundamental element of human interaction that enables individuals to establish, maintain, and enhance relationships. Hargie’s social communication skills represent a practical approach that veterinary professionals must develop. The importance of communication in healthcare has been well-established; however, challenges such as poor communication, miscommunication, and client dissatisfaction remain prevalent. This review article addresses communication issues between veterinarians and clients and explores potential solutions. By examining communication examples, this review highlights the key elements of the communication process, including the sender, receiver, message, and channel. Professionals must pay attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication aspects. Questioning skills, the type of questions posed, and the timing of these questions are also critical. Additionally, listening is a vital communication skill for veterinarians. The findings of this review suggest that effective communication between veterinarians and clients, a responsible approach, and respect for the client’s cultural background are crucial to successful interactions.
