Abstract
Pregnancy toxemia is a metabolic disease in ewes that typically occurs during the last 3 to 6 weeks of pregnancy. A negative energy balance during late pregnancy is a significant cause of the disease. Affected ewes exhibit neurological signs, quivering, depression, anorexia, weakness, staggering gait, blindness, recumbency, and coma, which may eventually lead to death. The diagnosis of pregnancy toxemia is based on anamnesis, clinical signs, and laboratory tests. Treatment options include administering medicine by injection or orally and performing a cesarean section to remove the fetus. Prevention involves providing high-quality and sufficient food and controlling factors that reduce feed intake or increase energy consumption in the animal.
