Abstract

X-rays are produced through three primary mechanisms: the acceleration of charged particles, atomic transitions between discrete energy levels, and the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. X-rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation, are analogous to visible light. Their wavelengths range from 0.03 to 3 nanometers, corresponding to frequencies between 1.6×10161.6 \times 10^{16}1.6×1016 Hz and 3×10193 \times 10^{19}3×1019 Hz, and energies ranging from 100 eV to 100 keV. X-rays are widely used in medicine, particularly in radiation therapy for cancer treatment, which requires significantly higher doses than those used for imaging. Lower-energy X-ray beams are typically employed for treating skin cancers, while higher-energy beams target internal cancers such as those in the brain, lungs, prostate, and breasts.
