Abstract

Melatonin, also known as the "dark hormone" and "circadin," is one of the most well-known animal hormones and was first discovered in plants in 1995. However, its role in plants has not been extensively studied. According to research conducted on several plant species, the presence of melatonin has been confirmed in various parts of plants, such as leaves, stems, roots, fruits, and seeds. The structural similarity of melatonin to some vital compounds, such as tryptophan, serotonin, and indole acetic acid, and the common biosynthetic pathway between melatonin and auxin (indole acetic acid), highlight the importance of this biogenic indoleamine as a regulator of plant vital functions. In addition to other proposed roles, melatonin plays a particularly significant role in the physiology of plant growth and reproduction.
